Lecture: The healing strength of Ayurvedic herbs

with Swami Nikhil Joshi

There isn't anything in the universe, which cannot be used as medicine,
No root, that is not medicine,
No word, that is not mantra,
No human being, who is not valuable.
Ayurveda saying

Herbs have a great meaning in Ayurveda, because they have an high nutritional content and have an effect in a versatile and soft way on the different body functions, tissues or organs as well as on the Physical and mental areas of the human being. With the help of the ayurvedic herbs, you can influence the Doshas among other things. Adjusted to the personal Constitution, strong Doshas can be calmed and too weak Doshas are strengthened.

Spices and herbs are a solid component of the ayurvedic medicine and are used in India since thousands of years. With the old knowledge of the healing power of herbs, spices and other healing plants, many complaints can be directly eased or preventive effects can be achieved. Circa 800 herbs are used in the ayurvedic medicin, while in whole India about 2500 medical herbs are used.

A lot of them, like curcuma, saffron or caraway, are also known in the west and are often available without problems.

A good knowledge about the healing powers and correct use of these herbs is important to be able to integrate them into the own nutrition and to use them effectively.

In our lecture, you get a first insight into the variety and effects of the ayurvedic herbs.

Workshop: Non-Violent Communication

with Julian Gebken

Introduction into "Non-Violent Communication", as by Marshall Rosenberg

"Beyond Right and Wrong is a place where we can meet" - Rumi. Or, as Marshall says, "Do you want to be right or happy? You can't be both!"

Non-Violent Communication is an effective method that helps us to connect with ourselves and others, even in the most difficult situations. This principle of non-violence - Ahimsa - is also an important pillar of yoga.

We will shed light on the divisive elements in our daily language and will learn to speak and listen with sympathy. Conflicts can thereby be resolved and relationships, which are based on mutual appreciation and compassion, can be formed.

Through the concrete, practical application of Non-Violent Communication, our attitude will be freer of violence so that we can daily contribute to lightheartedness and peace in ourselves and in the world.

Movie: Short cut to Nirvana

A documentary of Maurizio Benazzo and Nick Day

Website: www.melafilms.com

The Kumbh Mela is the biggest gathering of people in the history of humanity – although few in the West have ever heard of it. More than 70 million pilgrims attend this extraordinary spiritual festival, which has been held every 12 years near Allahabad, India, for over two millennia. A vast tent city is established to accommodate the masses, and many of India’s greatest gurus and spiritual leaders set up camp to give discourses to their devotees. On certain auspicious days everyone takes a holy dip at the confluence of two actual rivers - the Ganges and Yamuna - and a mythical river, the Saraswati. On the main bathing day, more than 25 million people bathe in the sacred waters. This single act of faith is believed to cleanse the sins of a thousand lifetimes and secure release from the endless cycle of rebirth – literally a short cut to the state of purest bliss… nirvana.

Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela takes a voyage of discovery through this vivid and vibrant world, accompanied by an irrepressible young Hindu monk, Swami Krishnanand, and several Westerners, each on their own spiritual quest. Together, they encounter some of the Kumbh Mela’s wisest and most fascinating characters, including an ascetic sadhu who has held his arm in the air for over 20 years, another who sits on a throne of nails, a Japanese devotee who is buried in a pit for three days in samadhi, a state of deep meditation, and a guru who proposes that Americans would greatly benefit from meditating for three hours each day. An honored guest, the Dalai Lama, also makes an appearance as senior leaders of Hinduism and Buddhism join together in an historic moment of unity.

More than a simple account of the Kumbh Mela, this film is a sensory experience of an ancient, grand occasion, a swirl of color and motion, song and cacophony, the sacred and the surreal -- spiritual India exactly as anyone would hope to find it. And from this unique event comes a powerful and uplifting message of peace and tolerance for all humanity.

Yoga and Sound

Continuous practice of yoga-positions - also called asanas - can unleash hidden or blocked energies.

We may have unintegrated energy manifesting as disharmony on a physical and or emotional level which may be removed from a state of stagnation and used for living.

In posture (Asana) practice we are concerned with 7 major energy centres located at important parts in the body 1)at the anus. 2)the reproductive organs. 3)thedigestive organs. 4)the heart. 5)the throat. 6)the brain 7)the crown centre.

The old yogis discovered that certain sounds corresponded to each of these areas and if voiced with concentratin and focus had the effect of releasing not only physical blockage at that area, but also had the effect of maximising and integrating the experience of awareness connected with that centre. For example - Love in the heart, intuition or clairvoyance at brain, creativity or artistry at reproductive centre.

Also listening to Mantras, while holding asanas ,can have a positive, relaxing effect on the whole organism. Hearing these sacred syllables, coming from the Sanskrit, helps to centre our mind and reminds us of our spiritual origin. So we can open up to our yoga-practice and deeper levels of consciousness with ease and devotion.

The process of opening up the physical body is a slow time honoured process, for the yoga practitioner the physical body is a direct link to the spiritual or inner body.

Enjoying breathing - Hatha-Yoga for Beginners

with Alexander Peters

Pranayama, the yogic science of breathing, plays a central role in the practice of yoga; it is through our breath that we unite the inner and outer aspects of the yoga path. The focus in this pranayama class will be on experiencing the breath in stillness and in movement. We will begin by exploring the way the breath moves in various body positions. Then we will encourage the breath to flow more freely through simple, yet dynamic posture sequences. This allows us to experience both depth (dirgha) and lightness (sukshma), the basis for relaxation and inner serenity. The class is suitable for beginners as well as for those who want to deepen their experience with the breath.

Raul Sengupta (India): Tabla, Darbukka, Congas, Djembe, Kajon, Percussion, Singing

Chintan Relenberg (Ger): Keyboards, Loops, Laptops, Bass, Percussion, Singing

Satgyan Fukuda (Japan): Bass

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Prem Joshua is a pioneer in the field of World Music, exploring and creating a new synthesis in sound which takes us beyond the borders of both East and West.
Haunting melodies on the sitar, bamboo flute and soprano sax soar over driving tabla rhythms - ancient Sanskrit and Sufi poems are re-awakened by captivating songs and chants. And while drawing inspiration from these deep wells of the musical traditions of the East, Joshua has never lost touch with the pulse of contemporary Western music. Over the years he has continued to refine his awesome talent for fusion, mixing meditative classical Indian ragas with highly energetic compositions, modern cutting-edge sounds and grooves, to create a music both distinctive and unique.
He is now the number 1 bestselling World Music artist in India and the daily newspaper "The Times of India" has lauded him as the new "Guru of Fusion". In 2003, the BBC nominated him for its prestigious "World Music Listeners Award".

Vinyasa Flow (also for Beginners)

with Patricia Thielemann

The core of the soul mirrors the foundation of heaven. Through our actions it's possible to express this spark of God into the world. Yoga can show us how.

When the ancient wisdom of Patanjali is embedded in a well-constructed Asana Practice, and is combined with responsibility, discipline, devotion, common sense and a sense of humor, one walks the path towards individual, true expression.

Through the descent into ones own depth, through taking on ones own life, (which is a gift from God) we will find heaven on earth -right here inside us, around us, not far away - In the Mitte of Berlin.
